Lyme disease

Not a pleasant subject, but one that we should all be aware of

when spending time in the countryside, especially with bare skin!

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by ticks.  It is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from one person to another.  The ticks thrive in places where there are deer and creep across the skin so gently that they cannot be felt.  It is only later, after a tick has bitten into the skin, that a red rash may appear and irritation be felt.

The adjacent photograph (courtesy of Wikipedia) shows the size of an adult tick compared to a match head.

The ticks are particularly plentiful in the following areas:

the New Forest in Hampshire

the South Downs

parts of Wiltshire and Berkshire

Thetford Forest in Norfolk

the Lake District

the Yorkshire Moors

the Scottish Highlands

A nude walk through a tick infested area can leave you with several of these tiny blood-sucking creatures on your legs.  One way of reducing the chance of being bitten is to keep away from long vegetation.  Ticks hang about on long grass and other plants, hoping to land on a passing animal, and a naked walker will do just as well as a deer!

Please note that this website does not endorse any particular product that claims to remove ticks safely.

Visitors to this website must read the appropriate descriptions of tick removal devices,

do their own research and make up their own minds.

The sooner ticks are removed the less chance there is of developing Lyme Disease.

Following a day's nude sunbathing and strolling,

the inspection and removal of ticks from each other can be quite fun!
